Bed Bugs in College Dorms and Student Rentals: What Students and Parents Should Know

Short answer: Bed bugs show up in dorms because lots of people, luggage and secondhand furniture move through the same rooms. On move-in day, check the mattress seams, bed frame and headboard for live bugs, tan shed skins or small dark spots before you unpack. If you find signs, report it to housing right away. Don't spray it yourself and don't move into a friend's room. Before you come home on break, check your bags and dry your clothes on high heat so you don't bring bed bugs home with you.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) says 36% of pest professionals reported treating bed bugs in college dorms, according to its 2025 Bugs Without Borders survey with the University of Florida (NPMA). Having bed bugs doesn't mean a room is dirty. UVA Housing says plainly that where bed bugs live "is not determined based on cleanliness" (UVA Housing & Residence Life). They're hitchhikers, and a dorm hall is full of rides.

Last summer a UVA student moved into an eight-unit apartment building in Charlottesville and found bed bugs in her room. We came out and did a heat treatment on her apartment right away. The landlord met us on site and had us treat the seven surrounding apartments with Aprehend so everyone was covered, then set up quarterly Aprehend treatments for the rest of the year.

Why do college dorms get bed bugs?

Dorms put many people in a small space, and those people bring luggage, backpacks, bedding and furniture from all over. NPMA points to the first weeks of a semester, when students settle in, furnish rooms with secondhand furniture and move through busy shared areas, as a time when bed bugs can spread (NPMA). The EPA notes bed bugs travel on furniture, bedding, luggage, boxes and clothing (EPA).

A single bug can be enough. Virginia Tech's extension entomologists explain that one mated female brought into a home can start an infestation without a male present, as long as she can feed (Virginia Cooperative Extension).

How do I check a dorm room for bed bugs on move-in day?

Do this before you make the bed or unpack:

  1. Keep your bags off the bed and floor while you look. Leave them in the hall or on a hard surface away from the bed.
  2. Pull back the mattress cover or sheets and check the seams, corners and tags, especially at the head of the bed (NPMA).
  3. Check the bed frame and headboard, including screw holes and joints.
  4. Look at chairs, couches and desk drawers in the room and lounge.
  5. Know what you're looking for: live reddish-brown bugs about the size of an apple seed, tan shed skins, tiny pale eggs, and small dark spots that look like ink marks (NPMA; EPA).

A flashlight makes this much easier. For photos of every life stage, see what bed bugs look like. A small fuzzy "worm" is more likely a carpet beetle larva; see bed bugs vs carpet beetles.

What should I do if I find bed bugs in my dorm?

Report it to housing or your RA right away. Most schools use their own contracted pest control, and their process comes first. UVA's housing guidance is a good example of what schools typically ask (UVA Housing & Residence Life):

  • Report it immediately through a work order or the facilities desk.
  • Don't throw things out or carry them out of the room, which can spread bugs to other rooms.
  • Don't try to treat it yourself. UVA warns that bed bugs are hard to kill and resistant to most store-bought insecticides.
  • Don't move to another room or sleep at a friend's place. The bugs can travel with you.
  • Bag and hot-wash clothes and bedding, and cut clutter so the treatment can reach everything.

Reporting early matters for another reason too. UVA says residents may be held responsible for treatment costs if an infestation spreads because it wasn't reported, or if they brought the bed bugs in. Check your own school's housing policy, since each one is different.

Virginia Tech's research backs up the "no DIY" advice. Practically all bed bug populations collected in Virginia have been found to be at least somewhat resistant to pyrethroid insecticides, the kind in many store-bought sprays (Virginia Cooperative Extension). The EPA also warns that foggers won't reach the cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide (EPA). More on that in why DIY bed bug treatments fail.

How do I keep bed bugs out of my dorm room?

  • Skip curbside and free furniture, or inspect it closely first. NPMA warns that a pest problem may be why it's "secondhand" (NPMA).
  • Use a mattress encasement. The EPA says encasements remove many hiding spots and make bugs easier to see (EPA). See do mattress encasements work?
  • Keep clutter down. Fewer hiding spots, and signs are easier to spot (EPA).
  • Be careful in shared laundry rooms. The EPA suggests carrying laundry in plastic bags, moving it from the dryer straight into a bag and folding it back in your room. A dryer on high heat can kill bed bugs (EPA).
  • Keep your backpack and coat off other people's beds, and away from their belongings in shared spaces (NPMA).

How do I avoid bringing bed bugs home from college on break?

This is the part parents ask about. A student going home for Thanksgiving or winter break can carry bed bugs from a dorm into the family home in a suitcase or laundry bag.

  • Check bags before you pack. Look at seams, zippers and pockets of suitcases and backpacks.
  • Bring dirty laundry home sealed in a plastic bag, and take it straight to the washer.
  • Unpack away from bedrooms, such as in a garage, mudroom or laundry room, not on a bed or couch. NPMA recommends unpacking away from sleeping areas after trips and breaks (NPMA).
  • Run washable items through a hot dryer, including backpacks and stuffed items that can take it (EPA).
  • Check luggage again before it goes into a closet.

The same steps work after any trip. See how to avoid bringing bed bugs home from travel.

Who pays if bed bugs show up in an off-campus student rental?

Off-campus houses and apartments follow Virginia landlord-tenant rules, not dorm policy. Who pays depends on the lease, when the bugs showed up, and whether they spread from another unit. We cover this in are landlords responsible for bed bugs in Virginia? and Virginia tenant rights and bed bugs. In apartment buildings, bed bugs can also travel between units; see can bed bugs spread between apartments?

Report it to your landlord in writing as soon as you see signs. Waiting gives the bugs time to spread.

What's the best treatment for a student house or apartment?

That depends on the size of the problem and the building. For rentals that turn over quickly, I usually recommend heat. Chemical treatments take time to work, so there's a risk of continued activity while people keep living there and moving in and out. I see the same thing with Airbnbs and short-term rentals. In a Virginia Beach Airbnb we heat-treated on October 17, 2026, a national company had already sprayed twice and certified it clear, but the last two guests still left in the middle of the night after finding bed bugs. We did a whole-house heat treatment, found live bed bugs during it, and the owner had her first new guest arriving four days later (read the case study).

After heat, you may see a few live bugs in the first week. That's normal: we also treat the baseboards, so stragglers come out and usually die off within about a week. If you're still seeing live bugs after that first week, call us. More in bed bugs after treatment and does heat treatment kill bed bugs? To get ready, see how to prepare for heat treatment.
